This week I am pretty busy attending few places at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. Today I went to the Young At Heart event where young designers or students could meet famous veteran designers, in a kind of speed date manner where they can get inside info about the world of design. This event started with an opening speech by Anthon Beeke which I already had met at the Graphic design festival in Breda, also I met few other guys from Breda during the train journey, I met Studio Smack.
I talked with few very special designers including the designer and story writer of the famous televised cat Dikkie Dik, also came across Hans Dirken who I already had met at the Gouden Noot award in Utrecht.
The designer of Dikkie Dik really had a special story because she started as a graphic designer and never thought about becomming an illustrator and a children book writer. She started out applying at Sesame street and got and offer to return with a concept for small childrens, and the character Dikkie Dik had let it own life and became a major hit. And now she does allot with this character. And really never had to search for a costumer to design for.
The conclusion on the talks with all the designers were really few returning things, like never be afraid to make mistakes or design ugly things, you always get another second chance to improve with another project and keep on learning. Also don't expect you would be a graphic designer if you are following that education life can change if life it own way and some how you could be doing things you never would had though you would.
After the speed dates we all got a book and then the Piet Zwart award was given. First there were few speeches and also Hans Dirken spoke then the award was given to Bruno Ninaber van Eyben, who is an industrial designer.
He had designer allot of great things, his style is very clean simple but effective. He designer the old dutch guldens coins and also done allot for Randstad. Truly allot of great looking designs.
